This post outlines one of the worst techniques of novice SEO “experts”. The following list of words on the linked page are the same color as the background – making the words invisible to viewers. Search engine robots can see the words, but they can also compare the text color to the background color and decide that these words are not viewable in the browser.

This technique imposes a search engine results penalty, making this page show up lower in search engines.

GoDaddy Price Increase Announced for .Com & .Net Domain Registrations

I just received an email from GoDaddy, the world’s largest domain registrar, and the email announced a price increase for .com and .net domain registrations. As of July 1, 2010, the price of .com domain names will increase 7%, while the price of .net domain names will increase by 10%. The email cited VeriSign’s price increase as the reason.

I am sure that other registrars will send similar emails to their customers, so keep this in mind if you want to renew and/or extend the length of your domain registrations prior to the price increase.

A 7% increase may not seem like a lot of money, but if you have a portfolio of 1,000 names at Godaddy and pay the full price of $10.69, a 7% increase means you will pay $11.44 per name, an increase of $750 for your entire portfolio.

On July 1, 2010, VeriSign®, the registry for .COM and .NET, will increase prices – .COM will go up 7%, and .NET by 10%.

The increase will be passed to registrars like Go Daddy and then, unfortunately, to consumers like you.

There’s a number of tricks to updating an auto repair shop’s web site for better SEO results.
In Orange County, the site ocautosites.com has extensive time on the net, a large directory of auto sites that gives them traffic and links to their clients which help their clients get better results. Some shops do not want to go that route and have tried creating their own series of seo tools – these are outlined here:

Start with a google account – with gmail – you need this to set up all other accounts, although you can use your own email account. Request a google voice account.
Create a sitemap and review it – are your page titles optimized for your geographical region?
Update your pages to meet the targets you are looking to show for.
Submit your site to google via the WebMaster tools.
Use your new Google account to set up a Google Local Business Listing.
Set up the other city based business directories – Merchant Circle, Yelp and City Search. If your business has been running for a few years, chances are you will need to simply claim your listing.
These accounts should be configured for your SEO needs.
Using your google account, set up a Twitter account, Facebook, YouTube. By adding photos, video and text to these sites, you can then re-use these links to populate your site and other on-line media. Links from external sources to your site help Google find out about your site which helps you get better SERP.
These are the basic steps.
From here, you need to find ways to promote your site – depending on your business model, you can use on-line forums and other blogs to get mention of your site or create a series of on-line articles on one of the free articles sites and have them link to your site.
